Het onderwerp van dit boek van de Amerikaanse antropoloog Edward Hall is tijd, en hoe de tijd bewust en onbewust wordt beleefd, gebruikt en ingedeeld in verschillende culturen. Om duidelijk te maken hoe verschillende culturen aankijken tegen tijd introduceerde Hall de termen monochrone (eerder westers, één ding tegelijk doen, planmatig werken, time management) en polychrone tijd (meerdere dingen kunnen tegelijk gebeuren, eerder focus op menselijke relaties dan op taken en tijdsplanning).

In dit boek introduceert Hall onder meer de begrippen 'Low context culture' en 'High context culture'. Bij communicatie in een high context-cultuur zit de informatie niet zo zeer in de expliciete boodschap of de oppervlakkige betekenis, maar in de context van de boodschap.
